SUMMARY:Healing a Nation: Israeli Trauma Initiatives Post-October 7
DESCRIPTION:On October 7\, 2023 and in the months since\, Israelis have experienced multiple\, ongoing sources of trauma: the massacre of October 7 itself\, the multi-front war that followed\, evacuees from the north and south who have lost their homes\, soldiers in active and reserve duty\, and the condition of Israeli hostages. \nAn already strained mental health care system and stigma around accessing mental health care have exacerbated the situation. On October 7\, 2024\, The Associated\, in partnership with Baltimore synagogues\, launched a campaign to support the Israel Trauma Resilience Center in Ashkelon\, raising over $850\,000. \nJoin the Baltimore Jewish Council\, The Associated’s Baltimore-Ashkelon Partnership\, Maryland/Israel Development center\, JAFI and JDC for a panel discussion to learn how our partners in Israel have responded to the mental health needs of the communities they serve. They will also explore what is unique about Israeli society and its economy that in the midst of such trauma it has shown such remarkable resilience over these last 16 months. \nQuestions? Contact Kate McDonald (kmcdonald@baltjc.org) \nREGISTER NOW. \n  \nPanelists Include: \nTamar Day serves as the Director of Small Business Support Programs at The Jewish Agency For Israel\, where she oversees initiatives designed to foster the growth of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across Israel. Her role includes managing grant and loan funds; running mentoring and consulting programs; and collaborating with business leaders\, philanthropists\, and government entities to empower entrepreneurs and strengthen the Israeli economy. \nDara Grossman is the Director of Strategic Partnerships for JDC’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative in Israel. With a strong background in management\, resource development\, and community engagement\, she has been with JDC in various roles for the past two decades. Before joining JDC\, Dara worked in informal education and holds a Master’s degree in Counseling. Originally from Birmingham\, Alabama\, Dara has lived in Israel for the past 28 years and now resides in Jerusalem with her husband and three children. \nTalia Levanon holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) in clinical social work from Bar Ilan University\, a degree in integrative psychotherapy from Hebrew University\, and a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from Bar Ilan University. Since 2001\, Talia Levanon has served as the CEO of the Israel Trauma Coalition (ITC) where she has been instrumental in the development and implementation of innovative models\, such as resilience centers and regional training centers. She has facilitated collaboration between government ministries and the Home Front Command to establish a unified approach to emergency preparedness and response both nationally and internationally. Her expertise has been sought in global post-disaster response efforts including the United States\, France\, and Ukraine. \nAvi Rosenzweig has spent the last decade as a business development and strategic planning consultant\, working with private and publicly-traded healthcare companies and helping them gain an in-depth understanding of their markets\, while providing insight on what investors look for and how they think. In addition to being an expert “connector”\, Avi excels in taking early and late stage healthcare startups to the next level\, leveraging his extensive network\, knowledge and experience. A native New Yorker\, Avi’s expertise is in helping startups reach their target markets and helping young companies expand and develop.

SUMMARY:Even Still?: Haredim and the Draft since October 7
DESCRIPTION:In a landmark decision on June 25\, the Israeli High Court ruled unanimously that since June 2023—when the last draft-exemption law expired—no legal mechanism exists to exempt Haredim from the draft and the government must work to enlist them immediately. In the months since\, this decision and the outcry that it prompted from the Ultra-Orthodox community have continued to make the headlines. The human costs of fighting a multifront war since October 7 have only intensified the debate. \n \nThe BJC invites you to join a webinar with Professor Noah Efron\, author of Real Jews: Secular vs. Ultra-Orthodox and the Struggle for Jewish Identity in Israel\, who will unpack the history of the Haredi draft exemption law\, the significance of the High Court’s decision\, and the ways in which it has been received by different segments of Israeli society. \nREGISTER HERE. \n

SUMMARY:10/7: 100 Human Stories
DESCRIPTION:The recently published book 10/7: 100 Human Stories is a masterful work of investigative journalism by acclaimed Haaretz reporter Lee Yaron\, chronicling the October 7 massacre that ignited a war through the stories of more than 100 civilians. These stories are the products of extensive interviews with survivors\, the bereaved\, and first responders in Israel and beyond. At a time when people are seeking a deeper understanding of the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how internal political turmoil in Israel has affected it\, 10/7 takes a fresh approach\, offering answers through the stories of everyday people\, those who lived tenuously on the border with Gaza. \nThe Baltimore Jewish Council invites you to a conversation with Lee who will share some of the stories she heard and speak about her experience of writing this book and the insights she gained. A book signing will follow the program. \nA subsidized copy of the book can be purchased in advance for $10 or on the night for $15 (cash only – retail price $30).* \nQuestions? Contact Kate McDonald (kmcdonald@baltjc.org) \nRegister here.  \n* Please note this is an in-person program only. In the event you have purchased a book in advance and then are unable to attend the program\, we will make arrangements for you to receive your book.

SUMMARY:Maryland Premiere of the Torn Documentary
DESCRIPTION:‘Torn’ delves into the heart of the controversy surrounding the ‘KIDNAPPED’ poster campaign\, which turned New York City’s streets into unexpected battlegrounds for pro-Israel and pro-Palestine activists. What started as a seemingly straightforward effort to raise awareness for the 240 hostages quickly escalated into an emotionally charged ‘paper war\,’ mirroring the complexities of a war thousands of miles away. \nPlease join Baltimore Hebrew Congregation and community partners for an evening that explores the “KIDNAPPED” campaign\, the Antisemitism that followed in NYC and around the globe\, and the true issues at stake that run far deeper than just tearing down posters. \nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Screams Before Silence Film Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \nScreams Before Silence\, a powerful new documentary led by Sheryl Sandberg\, captures first-person testimony from survivors\, first responders\, eyewitnesses\, released hostages\, forensic experts\, and advocates. Their harrowing accounts reveal the uncompromising truth: that Hamas used rape\, assault\, and mutilation in a brutal rampage of gender-based violence. \nThe world needs to know so this brutality never happens again. We must bear witness and we must learn how to take action to prevent these heinous acts from happening again. \nJoin Hadassah Greater Baltimore\, Baltimore Zionist District\, and the Baltimore Jewish Council for a screening of this important piece. A panel discussion will follow the film. \nTo register\, click here. \n  \nPlease note: Screams Before Silence contains accounts of sexual violence against women. We encourage you to take care of your mental and emotional health; a mental health professional will be on-site\, and attendees will be welcome to exit the room at any time.

SUMMARY:Is Reasonableness Still Relevant: Unpacking the Supreme Court’s Ruling with Haviv Rettig Gur
DESCRIPTION:A year ago\, the debate between Israel’s government and its judiciary over the nature of its democracy began\, leading to months of division and mass public protests. Following the horrors of October 7th\, those issues receded into the background as the country united behind the shared goals of defeating Hamas\, rescuing the hostages held in Gaza\, and preventing a multi-front war.  Yet 2024 began with Israel’s Supreme Court justices\, in a narrow 8 to 7 decision\, ruling that the reasonableness law passed by the Knesset over the summer undermines Israel’s democratic character and asserting 13 to 2 the court’s right in principle to strike down Basic Laws. What is the significance of these rulings? As the war with Hamas continues\, how much attention have they received? How likely is it that the debates over Israel’s judiciary will resume and the divisions reemerge? Or has Israel simply moved on? \nJoin the Baltimore Jewish Council as we welcome Haviv Rettig Gur\, Senior Analyst with the Times of Israel\, for a conversation about all this and more on Thursday\, January 18th at 11:30am. \nQuestions? Contact Kate McDonald: kmcdonald@baltjc.org \nClick here to register.

The stories we bring back are not just our own but represent the shared strength and determination of communities affected by the tragedy. \nWe wholeheartedly encourage you to attend\, extend this invitation to others\, actively participate in the live discussion\, and pose any questions you may have during the Q&A session.
